Maritime Transport and Business Studies – National Diploma

Management, even at the lowest levels in ports and shipping is a demanding but  satisfying profession, which increases in complexity and breath of responsibility, with rapid changes in technology and business practices.

The National Diploma in Maritime Transport and Business Studies (MTBS) ND programme prepares students for the world of maritime business. The programme is designed to provide an adequate knowledge of management and administration of ports and shipping operations. It is a two year programme made up of four semesters of course work and one semester of Industrial Experience.

The thrust of the programme is a core curriculum with a blend of professional, technological and academic courses which gives students a firm conceptual analytic foundation for decision making and prepares students to meet the challenges of the modern corporate world.

Prospects

Graduates are equipped to pursue careers in in Shipbroking, Marine Insurance, Freight Forwarding, Logistics and Distribution, as well as Arbitration. They may also further their education by proceeding on HND or degree studies in Business Administration/Management, Transportation Management, Ports and Shipping Management.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the ND MTBS programme is through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Candidates are expected to meet the required cut off score in the JAMB Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The required UTME subjects for MTBS are Mathematics, English, Economics or Commerce, Geography or Government.

Candidates are also required to have passed five (5) subjects at Ordinary Level of WAEC/NECO/GCE or NABTEB. The Required ‘O’ Level Subjects are English Language and Mathematics and any other three subjects from the following: Economics, Geography, Commerce, Accounts/Business Studies/Statistics, Government, History, Home Economics/Marketing, Literature in English/French and Additional Mathematics/Biology
