Mercy Opeoluwa ADEOGUN is a resilient Agricultural Extension and Rural Development expert, who undertakes the complex challenges of changing the mind set of rural farmers towards adoption of innovation. She has a passion for the promotion of small holder farmers and indigenous practices as basis for improving agricultural productivity. She has extensive practical knowledge in working with farmers’ group with philosophy of ensuring improved livelihood of small holder farmers and fisher folks.

Mercy earned a Diploma in Agriculture from University of Ife (School of Agriculture), Akure 1986. In her quest for more knowledge in agriculture, Mercy was admitted into University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in 1989 where she obtained Bachelor of Agriculture in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. She later proceeded to University of Ibadan for Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Extension and rural Development.  Prior to her PhD degree, she taught briefly with the Lagos State Polytechnic, before joining Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island, Lagos in 1998.

A foundation staff of the Agricultural Extension Unit of the College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, she was a Coordinator of the adopted villages and schools program of West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) from 2013-2015. She is currently a Principal Lecturer and the Head of the Fisheries Technology Department.  

Her current focus is on impacting youths’ life for future self actualization and dissemination of information to improve rural people and small holder farmers and fisher folk’s livelihood. She has more than twenty one years’ hands-on extension and rural development experience, and is passionate about assisting the small holder farmer and fishers in Nigeria. As one of the prominent advocate for organic agriculture, Mercy delivers relevant and timely advice and expertise on star- ups, for small farmers, youths and women and men. She has also pioneered an NGO ‘Launch Out Now Foundation’ that engages in training and empowerment of retired women, men and youth in organic agricultural production for healthy food and safe environment.

Dr Adeogun has authored three books; Concise Agriculture for Higher Schools, Concise Agricultural Extension Manual for Monotechnics, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education and Indigenous Fish Processing Practices in Nigeria.  She has also written many articles in peered review Journals.

Dr Adeogun is a mentor with the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD), a member of Agricultural Extension Society of Nigeria (AESON), the Nigeria Rural Sociological Association (NRSA), the Children and Youth In Agriculture Programme (CYIAP), and the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON).
