Science Laboratory Technology (ND)

The National Diploma Programme in Science Laboratory Technology is designed to produce technicians capable of assisting Laboratory technologists in various laboratory analysis and practical work. The programme aims at providing students with adequate information on scientific principles and theories and to help them develop practical skills for scientific investigation.

On completion of this programme, the diplomate should be able to:

  • Assist in chemical and biochemical analyses and quality control in: industry (oil, food, brewing, detergent, textiles, etc.), hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutions;
  • Assist in physics and electronic laboratories with physical analyses and the maintenance of instruments
  • Assist in biological and microbiological analyses and experiments in hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutes
  • Work as sales, marketing, administration and management representative in the industries
  • Set up his/her own business

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Entry requirements for the National Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology programme include at least a minimum score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME),

Five credit passes at not more than two sittings in West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), National Technical Certificate (NTC), General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level, or the West African Examination Certificate (WAEC) in relevant subjects.

The relevant subjects are: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other subject from: Metal Work, Wood Work, Technical Drawing, Basic Electronics, Basic Electricity, Economics, Commerce, Statistics, Further Mathematics, Computer Studies, Geography and Biology or Agricultural Science.

Opportunities exist for grandaunts in the Food and Beverages production industries, Environmental health department, Water industry, Educational institutions/Research institutes, Food/ drug administration and control agencies, Medical/diagnostic laboratories.
